What should I do if my Snapper mower won't start?

If your Snapper mower won’t start, here are common troubleshooting steps:

  • Brake not fully pressed: The engine won’t crank unless the brake pedal is fully engaged.
  • Blade switch is on: Make sure the PTO (blade engagement) switch is turned OFF.
  • Battery issues: Check for a weak, dead or disconnected battery. Clean terminals if needed.
  • Fuel problems: Use fresh unleaded gasoline (87 octane or higher, with no more than 10% ethanol).
  • Choke setting: Make sure the choke is in the correct position for starting, especially when cold.
  • If the mower still won’t start, check out our troubleshooting guide, refer to your owner’s manual or contact an authorized Snapper dealer.
How do I replace or tighten the drive or deck belts on my Snapper mower?

Snapper riding mowers have deck belts (to spin the blades) and drive belts (to move the mower).

To replace a belt:

  • Deck belt: Remove the mower deck and guards, then slide off the belt from the pulleys.
  • Drive belt: You may need to remove guards or lift the mower to access the belt under the chassis.

To adjust belt tension (if applicable), locate the tensioning nuts or spring-loaded cable near the belt path and follow the instructions in the Maintenance section of your owner’s manual.

⚠️ Caution: Always turn off the engine, remove the key and disconnect the spark plug before performing any maintenance.

How often should I sharpen or replace Snapper mower blades?

Blades should be sharpened every 25 hours of mowing or whenever you notice a decline in cutting quality. However, for yards with rough terrain, more frequent sharpening may be needed.

Replace the blades if:

  • They’re cracked, bent or chipped.
  • They can’t be balanced after sharpening.
  • They show excessive wear.

Use only Snapper-approved replacement blades for safety and optimal performance.

Is there a warranty on my Snapper riding mower and how do I make a claim?

Yes, most Snapper riding mowers come with a 3-year limited residential warranty on the mower and a 2-year warranty on the Briggs & Stratton engine. This covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. Check out the Snapper warranty page for more information.

Note: The warranty does not cover normal wear items like blades, belts, tires or damage from misuse or lack of maintenance.
